Thamarai welcomes volunteers for service learning. Our main need for volunteers is in the after-school program. Experience is not necessary but it is helpful if you have some teaching experience, particularly in English as a second language, or specific skills in arts and crafts. We seek volunteers who can come regularly for a minimum of one month. When you first come to Thamarai, you will generally have a few days to observe and familiarize yourself with the children and the way the centre operates. We will then ascertain how your interests and skills can be incorporated. If you become involved in teaching in the after-school program, we offer support through regular meetings with the team for lesson planning and skills development training sessions. Weekly tamil class is also available. In addition to the after-school program, we always welcome extra help on children’s days and with projects such as the development of learning materials, communications and training. If you would like to undertake a service learning experience in Thamarai, please contact us in advance and we will identify how your visiting dates match with our needs. Once you are in Auroville, phone us and we will meet you and explain how things function – please do not just show up unannounced!
